When Preppy Became Trendy...

I got my new Virginia Living Magazine yesterday in the mail.  I had to chuckle when I saw the cover:

I have never considered myself "preppy".  I've never even used that word I don't think?  I consider myself to be a "classic Southern dresser".  I love ALL bright colors.  Pink and green are no more special than blue or yellow to me.  I do have various critters on some of my pants.  I always have.  I thought that was normal?  I wear bows in my hair, because that is what Southern girls do.

I wear my loafers until they split.  And then I buy another pair. Another pair identical to the last pair.  Because they are classic.  There is no reason for change.

I like "trendy" clothes on Friday nights.  Silver boots with buckles, and lots of black.  It's fun to "experiment".  But on Saturday morning I'm right back to my standard attire.  It is what it is.

It amazes me that people have a fascination with being "preppy".  It disturbs me that you can purchase a seersucker blazer at American Eagle.  Or Old Navy.  Eww....please no.

And here is my Virginia Living Magazine playing along.

Sigh,

T

I hear you...sometimes it’s prep overload! I think people should just buy what they love and not worry about anything else. Oh, and that guy needs to tuck his shirt in! haha

Yeah it flusters me to see stores like A&E try to be "preppy". I call myself preppy, but classic preppy certainly. Cardigans, blazers, Jackie-O style.

Love that cover...just admit it, you're a true prep at heart! :) Haha!

I wear ribbons in my hair because I am an eternal child (not that everyone who does it is childish, just me!) but I am not Southern. I think I wear way too much black, but I carry it off because I'm from NY. I love bright colors but I can never seem to find those that fit, so I gravitate towards the black. Maybe time for a change now that I'm a Georgian...?

neiman marcus classifies it as a "trend" for guys this spring...its been around forever its not a trend haha.

A&E ruins the definition of dressing preppy...did i mention that in a store in NYC they had a true prep book in their window display....i was like youre kidding right

That pictures is perpetuating one my pet peeves! My husband works in finance and always has to wear a suit and tie, but always wears an old nasty camo hat with it when he's not at work....NOT OKAY!

I do not really understand American Eagle... maybe it is because I am old now, ha! I had some shorts from there in high school and I loved them but I do not see the fascination with the store... same with Abercrombie (although I do have to say my fave pair of jeans EVER came from Abercrombie... I was 22 and they were perfect... but it was one of those situations where they made them once and then never made them again, boo!)

Love Story, that is the book/ movie that brought that saying "preppy" alive I think. I read that book when it first came out and loved it of course. It was many, many years ago. We were excited when Ali McGraw was going to be in the movie and wear Ladybug & Villager clothes. I worked for Ladybug at the time. I love all things with color.

I have to say I've been labeled preppy. My fiance teases me a great deal for it. I just think I dress cleanly and like you said, southern. I think southern and preppy go hand in hand a lot. I do have to say something that really bugs me, I am attending ETSU for my masters and I hear these kids talking about so and so is preppy but the person is wear abercrombie, american eagle, aeropostale and torn jeans. Definitely not my idea of clean and put together dresser.

It's a trend. People have called me preppy too but I have never used that word either.
So 80's in my opinion? Remember? preps, skaters/nuwave?
