Seersucker Suit Movie Review - From Hell

I had not heard of the movie From Hell.  It was on HBO over the weekend, and TEN said it was pretty good.  I know I will probably get a bit of flack for this, but I'm really not a Johnny Depp fan.  I think he needs to take a shower.  And to cut his hair.  But, that is just my opinion.

I wasn't a fan of Edward Scissorhands.  I thought it was creepy.  I wasn't a fan of any of those Pirates of the Caribbean movies either.  See.  I told you I was going to get flack :)

TEN said "it's a pretty good movie, but then...what movie with Johnny Depp isn't?".  I cocked my eyebrow, but held my tongue.

As the movie started I realized it was a Jack the Ripper movie!!  YAYYYYYYYYYY :)  I love Jack the Ripper.  Well, not JTR really...but more the concept of who he could be.  And this movie fit the bill.  And I have to say....Johnny Depp was pretty good.  I was a great fan of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which cast Johnny Depp in the lead.  He was an investigator.  Perhaps I like it best when Johnny Depp is an investigator?

Anyway, this movie was great!  It was dark, and spooky and a little bit scary.  At one point I figured out who JTR was, but I didn't dwell on it.  The movie was too good, and I wanted to see the end of it.  I wanted to know how things worked out for Inspector Abbeline.

And for Mary Kelly.

I think what made me enjoy this movie so much was that the viewer is introduced to the prostitutes.  We understand why they don't just "stay off of the streets" while JTR is out there.  They simply can't. They don't have a choice.  And THAT made this movie, and JTR, all the more scary :(

I'm glad people don't still get around by driving carriages.  The sound of a carriage, on a cobble stone street, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.  Even just thinking about it right now.  EEEEEEEEEKS!

But I do have a question.  Why is it that everyone is always blaming the Masons for everything?  My grandfather was a Mason.  I take offense.  It's like anything that is "unsolved" must be attributed to the Masons somehow.  Grrr....

So, for giving an old story a new spin, and for making my hair stand on end, I give From Hell:

TWO SEERSUCKER SUITS!!  This movie really was good.  I'm not sure I would recommend that you rush to the theater to see it, were it still playing there, but I would recommend that you see it on HBO or from Netflix.  And just to be clear, it isn't a "horror movie". You aren't going to lose sleep over it.  I promise.  There is a little bit of blood though, so perhaps you should watch it after the kids have gone to bed :)

Well, I am with you on the Johnny Depp thing. He looks like he needs a shower, and his hair looks like it needs a good scrub. Get a haircut Johnny!
Since you liked the movie, I will have to check it out.

I also enjoy this movie. I won't even give you flack for offending my delightfully dirty Johnny.

Ditto to loving the masons. Great-grandpa was a mason and as far as I know, he never did anything stealthier than...well, I can't even think of anything stealthy ever!

And thanks for giving me a new movie to look forward to. :) I love costume dramas and suspense movies, so this sounds like the best of both worlds!

I think you watch really weird movies. I haven't heard of half of these. Or maybe I live in a bubble???

THANK YOU for publicly questioning why the Masons are always blamed for things. I myself have never known a Mason, but I went to one of their nursing homes when I was a wee one and we learned a lot about their benevolent deeds and history. What Gives???
