Empire State of Mind

For the last week I've been watching Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.  Non-stop.

I've gotten to "know" the people behind the project.  I've seen them talk about how much this project means to them, and why they feel personally attached to the tragedy.  I get chills when I listen to Daniel Libeskind talk about his vision...his plan.  The plan that was chosen.

If you haven't had the chance to see what is being done, please take a minute to watch the video below.

Tomorrow morning I'm boarding a plan for New York City.  I'm going because it's Fashion Week.  Tomorrow is Fashion's Night Out, and we are going to have a lovely time :)  Friday we are going to play in the city, and then Saturday we are going to the Norwalk Oyster Festival.  Sunday we are going to the Greenwich Polo Club for a polo match.

Part of me is torn, and wants to visit Ground Zero on Sunday.  On September 11th, 10 years after the tragedy.  To be there when they open the memorial.

But, part of me doesn't.

Part of me thinks it would be wise to visit another time.  On another trip, when family members of the fallen aren't gathering to mourn together.  It almost seems as though my presence would be an imposition.

And so, I'm going to watch a polo match.  I'm going to drink some cocktails and I'm going to make a toast.  To those who are no longer with us, and to those that miss them.  And....to those who have done one hell of a job building a memorial that will give so many a place to come.  A place to remember.  A place to finally find peace.

Until I return...

Bon voyage! Have fun! I'm so jealous. The first year they did FNO was when I was visiting TLS in England and since then, I haven't been back around FNO time. I want to go one year.

aaah you're going to my stomping grounds in connecticut and I am so jealous. I do agree it can be a difficult time to be in the city and half to balance sadness with the enjoyment.

I have loved that series! I can't get enough of it and it totally makes you see Ground Zero in a different light. It's a good choice not to go that day- I never thought about being an imposition and I want to see the new site too but I agree that maybe that space should be for them on that day... have a great trip!

What a wonderful weekend you have planned! I am jealous! Have fun and enjoy yourself.

I have seen the specials on the rebuilding of ground zero. It is unbelievable how they lay all that heavy steel and concrete. Every time I see someone interviewed on tv this week about 9/11 it brings tears to my eyes. I remember watching the news that morning having breakfast when all it all started happening. I couldn't believe what I was watching. It is a vivid memory that I will never forget.

Yes... a toast to all we lost.
And finally through all the hard work they have done downtown...a place where loved ones can find some peace. It is so important, since so many could never bury their loved ones.

Well said, my friend.
