Seersucker Movie Review - Eat Pray Love

I'm sure you have all heard more than you care to about Eat Pray Love lately.  But I saw it.  And you know that means I've gotta do this.  So here we go....

I read Eat Pray Love.  A girlfriend gave me the book after my father passed away.  I enjoyed it.  Well, I had a hard time getting through India, but other than that I enjoyed it.  I had just returned from Italy, and I liked that chapter the best probably.  But Bali was pretty nice too.  Anyway, I liked the book.

When MK heard that the movie was coming out on Friday she immediately determined that we should go.   She was so excited she could barely contain herself.  I, on the other hand, was "eh".  Not that I didn't want to see it, but I wasn't DYING to see it the first night it was out.  But I said I would, and I went.

Now why was I not so very excited you ask?  Well, I'll tell you.  I find that when I read a book and then see the movie, I am disappointed 98% of the time.  The movie can NEVER capture the essence of the book.  And I want to stand up and yell to the people in the audience "you don't even understand these characters like I do because you have not read the book and they are not telling you everything you need to know in this movie!"  Of course I never do stand up and say that.  But I think it.  And then we leave the theater and I pronounce "shouldn't have read the book first".  And there you have it.

Let me just say that this was not the case with Eat Pray Love.  I was expecting it to be, and I was wrong.  Granted, the relationship she formed in Bali with someone (you know who I mean) didn't receive all of the time and nurturing it deserved.  It seemed to take place rather quickly, when in reality it did not.  But other than that...I've got no critiques.  I know right?!?!?!  How is that possible?  Well, it is.

So whether or not you agree with me.  Whether or not you think this movie is ridiculous and will have unhappy housewives across the world hocking all of their jewels to take off for a year to "find themselves".  Whether or not you dislike Julia Roberts profusely (i do tend to fall into this category.  i don't like Sandra Bullock very much either).  I would recommend seeing this movie.  Take the plot metaphorically and simply take a year (or some other amount of time) to get to know yourself.  Take some time to figure out who you are, and what truly does make you happy.  And what does NOT make you happy.  And if you are perfectly happy then good for you.  Don't watch this movie :)  You've already got it figured out apparently.

So because I HAVEN'T got it figured out.  And because I probably do need to hock all of my frocks and take off to Italy, Bali and Prague (I'm not a fan of India or silence or meditation), I give this movie:

THREE SEERSUCKER SUITS!  DON'T MISS IT!

Unless you've got it all figured out.  And you couldn't be happier.  Then you could probably miss it :)

Taking off for a year whether I have it all figured out or not sounds like fun to me but not likely to happen.
I have to agree that if you've read the book the movie always sucks.

What a cute movie review! I love the "three seersucker suits" - very clever. I can't wait to see the movie this weekend with my girls!

I won ticket to the preview showing through the radio.. and I didn't go! Not that I didn't want, I'm just a busy girl :) but I wasn't overly excited, want-to-see-it-early but I do wanna see it. But do you think I would be better off reading the book first, or just see the movie since it captures the book well.

thanks!!

Great review! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take a year off?

Is that what I said? Haha ;)

I did think the movie was gorgeous and I am researching my next international trip as we speak (I've vowed I will travel internationally next year!) so I guess that's what I took out of it. :)

I am the same way about books to movies. Time Travelers Wife, I got into the book (after some mild confusion). The movie to anyone who didnt read it, well it plain sucked.

But I truly LOVED Eat Pray Love, the book atleast. I gave myself a week to go see the movie, and will be seeing it this weekend. Given the current transition I am in, I have no doubt Im going to love it

When I read Eat Pray Love, I was in a transitional period in my life, so I loved it on a whole different level. I thought the movie was wonderful, but agree with you when it hastened everything. It took Liz a long time to be able to truly clear her mind, and the movie made it seem like after one time she was able to do it. Her relationship was also made to look quick, when it was not.
Loved your review. :)

you're too funny! I will only see it because you gave it THREE SEERSUCKER SUITS! LOL.

I just saw it tonight - and I loved it. My only complaints - Bali was so different from book Bali...like, why did they leave out the hilarious 'banana' scene and totally didn't develop Wayan's character and her relationship with her.

And finally - Sofi had an American accent in the movie...where was her Swedish accent?

But other than those nit picky things, lol... I loved it!

I saw the movie this weekend and loved it! I'm also skeptical about the movie living up to the book, but I think this movie did a great job. It did make me want to plan a big vacation though!

I can't wait to see it!! I loved the book and thought the same thing about seeing the move, but...come on! How can a movie with Julia Roberts not be good?? :)
