It's Westie Wednesday!! Let's Talk Vitamin D :)

I'm still a bit out of sorts, so no real Westie Wednesday post today.  I will share with you that everyone at the conference I went to was handing out these bags to grocery shop with, or whatever.  I've already got about 50 from Kroger, but they kept shoving them at me.  So I took them.  Louis has figured out how to open them up on the floor and crawl into them.  But he can't get turned around so that he can see out.  So I pick him up.  In the bag.  And carry him around.  It's quite entertaining for everyone involved.

Now, on to Vitamin D.  I went to the doctor for my annual visit last week and he asked how I was feeling.  I'm the chatty type, so I tell him.

Me: Well, I'm a bit worn out at the moment.  But then, I've just come back from Texas.  And really.  I'm always worn out this time of year.  Seasonal depression and all.
Doc: Seasonal depression?  I hardly think you've got that.
Me:  Oh, you would be surprised.  I don't even care to get dressed up and go to cocktail parties this time of year.  I'd just rather curl up on the couch with the puppy and a book.  I become anti-social.
Doc: Do you cry?
Me: Only when I realize I've gained 10lbs and don't fit into any of my pretty frocks anymore
Doc:  There is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder, but I don't think you have that.  It's quite severe.  When was the last time you had a total physical?
Me:  Ummm...probably when I went to college?
Doc:  I'm ordering some tests.  blah, blah, blah...doctor speak

I got my results back yesterday.  Turns out I have a terrible Vitamin D dificiency.  Who knew?  Apparently some people just do.  And the sun in the Spring and Summer give you enough Vitamin D that you appear to be okay.  But you still really aren't.  And then in the Fall and Winter you become sickly and sad and no longer care to wear your pretty frocks and carry your fancy purses.  What a travesty!

So Mr. Doctor had me run down to the Walgreens and get some 50,000IU prescription Vitamin D pills.  I've got to take them for 12 weeks, or until I get back to normal.  Apparently one should have a 32-100 number for their Vitamin D.  I've only got a 14 at the moment.  No bueno :(

I took my first pill today.  I expect I'll be doing cartwheels and planning parties in no time.  So, forgive my lack of enthusiasm as of late.  It's really not my fault.  I've got a note.  From my doctor.

I'll take your doctor's excuse this time. From now on I expect normal Westie Wednesday. haha Kidding! Hopefully once your Vit D level is back up you'll have more energy for your day-to-day activities.

I know what you are going through. So many people I know have low vitamin D levels. And they are sun people! We are all on Vitamin D. By the way, I love your Westie. They are the cutest of breeds. We have a Westie named Jake. I will post a picture some time. Hope you feel better.

I've been hearing so much about Vitamin D recently and know quite a few people who take Vitamin D pills. Hope it helps!

I had to do the 50,000 unit pills as well! Took mine for about five months and now just take 2,000 units a day. But I'm still tired. And chubby. I'm still blaming the vitamin D. :-)

Good for you.. I am glad you have a good doc who figured this out. I was run down, exhausted and went to many docs until I found a really good one who had the sense to test for Vitamin D. I was severely deficient as well. The supplements are cheap and do wonders. You will feel a difference. They are necessity for everyone to take from October-April... My doctor said 85% of the population is vitamin D deficient...it can cause depression, etc... So glad you have this figured out!
