I don't think it's any secret that I'm an Anglophile.
My mother is a bit of an Anglophile as well, and she mentioned this movie to me over Thanksgiving. How much she wanted to see it. What the background was. I, of course, was fascinated.
I finally saw The King's Speech on Sunday evening. See it in the theater if you can. See it in the theater so that you can begin to understand how overwhelming it was for Bertie (aka King George VI) when he found himself facing the public. Trying to deliver a speech. See it in the theater because it makes this man larger than life. And he was. After all, he was the King of England for Heaven's sake!
(my heart was literally pounding in my chest during this scene)
I laughed out loud so many times during this movie. It was so heartwarming and endearing. The friendship that was developed between Bertie and Lionel Logue. The love affair between Bertie and his wife, Elizabeth. The pride I felt for Bertie when he delivered his first wartime speech. I mean seriously, ME being proud of HIM? Yep.
Give it about 20 minutes to get going. The background they are giving really is necessary for the movie to make sense. And your ear will adjust to the accents. I don't know if it was just the theater I was in? But their accents were terribly hard to understand right at first. So give it 20 minutes. You won't be sorry :)
In a nutshell, it's a true story-feel good movie. And because it is historical, and British, and fabulous I am giving it:
THREE SEERSUCKER SUITS! Do Not miss this movie. Even if you don't think you will like it, rent at home. I promise you will be pleasantly surprised. After all...who can't use a little inspiration?
Speaking of the upper crust of England's society. Have any of you heard of this Downtown Abbey show of sorts that is debuting here in the states this Sunday?
I watched this trailer, and I can't make up my mind. I have determined that the music is awful. Absolutely dreadful, actually. But I can't decide if the show is worth watching? Could it be Britan's answer to Mad Men? Hmmm...

Not familiar with Downtown Abbey. What channel is it on? I was a huge fan of The Tudors but didn't have Showtime so I would either watch it when it came out on DVD or at other people's houses.
Have a good weekend!
This movie is on my to-watch list! I may have to watch Downton Abbey simply because it has Maggie Smith in it.
